L’elisir d’amore is an “essential” Italian comic opera, and this 1958 recording, recorded with the forces of La Scala Milan, has a distinctively Italian pedigree. If its Nemorino, Luigi Alva, was born in Peru, he trained and established his reputation in Milan. He is paired with the enchantingly spirited Rosanna Carteri as Adina, while two of Italy’s finest baritones, Rolando Panerai and Giuseppe Taddei, sing Belcore and Dulcamara. Donizetti’s delightful score is in the hands of a master of the bel canto idiom, Tullio Serafin.
History
L’Elisir d’Amore premiered at Milan’s Teatro Cannobiana in 1832. The opera is quintessential Donizetti, and one of the composer’s greatest popular successes. Nemorino, a poor peasant is in love with Adina, a wealthy landowner. Unable to summon the courage to express his feelings, he buys a bottle of special elixir from a traveling medicine man. Unbeknownst to Nemorino, the bottle holds nothing but Bordeaux wine, but the ‘Elisir’ works some magic nevertheless.
