“Diva” is an Italian word derived from the Latin divus or “the divine one”.In the world of opera, however, diva takes on a more exalted meaning.

The legendary, Maria Callas, one of the greatest singers to have ever graced the stage at the Metropolitan Opera, was often referred to as “La Divina” or “Diva” because of her temperamental nature, but one doesn’t have to be an opera singer to hold the title.

A stylish choice for your favorite Diva and fan of the Met.

History

Diva

Diva is an Italian word derived from the Latin divus, which literally translates as “the divine one” or “goddess.”

In the world of opera, however, diva takes on a more exalted meaning, referring to the principal female singer on stage and harking back to a time when opera singers were music’s biggest stars.
