Clementine Hunter "Zinnias Looking At You" Tea Towel(18” W x 26” L)
Featuring silk-screened, hand-embroidered zinnias in a light blue vase on a black background, this 100% natural linen tea towel finished on the bottom with ivory crochet lace is an interpretation of a painting by famed Afro-American artist, Clementine Hunter (c.1887-1988). Said to have been her favorite of all flowers, zinnias appear throughout many of Hunter’s works.
Hunter, who lived and worked on Melrose Plantation in the Cane River region of central Louisiana is known for her bright, whimsical folk paintings depicting daily life on the plantation, picking cotton and pecans, washing clothes and gatherings of people attending important events like funerals and baptisms at the river.
Originally using paints left behind by a plantation visitor, Clementine Hunter painted on whatever surfaces she could find, particularly discarded items such as window shades, jugs, bottles, gourds, wood, snuff boxes, iron pots, cardboard boxes, cutting boards and plastic milk jugs.
Reminiscent of the Met’s critically-acclaimed production of George Gershwin’s powerful American opera, Porgy and Bess.

The Gershwins' Porgy and Bess
One of America’s favorite operas returns to the Met for the first time in nearly 30 years. James Robinson’s stylish production transports audiences to Catfish Row on the Charleston waterfront, vibrant with the music, dancing, emotion, and heartbreak of its inhabitants.
“If you’re going to stage Gershwin’s opera, this is how,” raved the Guardian when the new production premiered in London in 2018.
David Robertson conducts a dynamic cast, featuring the sympathetic duo of Eric Owens and Angel Blue in the title roles and an all-star ensemble that includes Golda Schultz, Latonia Moore, Denyce Graves, Frederick Ballentine, Alfred Walker, and Ryan Speedo Green.
