Description
Handcrafted and hand-painted in France, this Limoges porcelain box was created especially for the Met Opera Shop. It features an image of an easel holding Marc Chagall's mural The Sources of Music. The mural is one of a pair created for the lobby of the new Metropolitan Opera House at Lincoln Center in 1966.
Originally Limoges boxes were created to hold snuff and candies. Later they became a fashion statement and an indication of social status with the European aristocracy. Today they are used to mark life's special occasions or collected as objects of lasting beauty. Each piece is trimmed with 22K gold and made in Limoges, France, renowned since the 1700s for its exquisite porcelain.
