This production of Jiri Kylian’s adaptation of Bizet’s Carmen is part of Arthaus Musik’s Elegance Series, which is a collection of ballet performances from the world’s best dance houses featuring the greatest choreographers and celebrating the legacy of legendary choreographer Marius Petipa. In addition to Kylian’s 2006 black and white film Car Men, this release also includes his solo Silent Cries and his ballet La Cathedrale Engloutie. Both Car Men and Silent Cries feature Jiri Kylian’s muse, Sabine Kupferberg. Each display a surreal aesthetic which is unique to Kylian’s choreography.
One of the most popular operas of all time, Georges Bizet’s Carmen (1875) tells the story of a beautiful and passionate gypsy whose love affair with an officer ends in tragedy. The score boasts several of opera’s greatest hits, including Carmen’s Habanera and the Toreador Song.
