This is a recording of the ingenious film, Car Men, by Boris Paval Conen and Jirí Kylián, which is an interpretation of Georges Bizet’s famous opera, Carmen.

Kylián’s inspiration for his re-creation came from two subjects native to his homeland – the Tatra, a Czech car from 1936 and an abandoned coal mine in the Czech Republic.
Though the production is inventive in it’s setting, characters of the original opera have been kept intact: Sabine Kupferberg (Carmen), Charles Hruš (Don Jose), David Krügel (Escamillo) and Giogonda Barbuto (Micaela).

In addition to Car Men, two other choreographies are presented here --  La Cathédrale Engloutie and Silent Cries. La Cathédrale Engloutie (1975) – set to the music of Debussy – is the story about an old cathedral, which sunk into the sea as a result of the sinful lives lead by the people who lived in the village.

Silent Cries (1986) is a 12 minutes solo danced by a young Sabine Kupfenberg to the music of Debusy’s Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun.
