History
Animals in the Opera
From Aida to Carmen, from Die Zauberflöte to the Ring cycle—animals both real and mythological have been seen on the operatic stage for centuries.
Horses, donkeys, bears, elephants, birds, dragons, and many others are featured as minor, and sometimes major, characters in operas performed all over the world. In the Met’s first season at Lincoln Center in 1966–67, goats and a camel were seen in the world premiere of Barber’s Antony and Cleopatra.
More recently, horses have graced the stage in La Fanciulla del West, among others, a mule appeared in Pagliacci, and a pair of Irish Wolfhounds starred in Lucia di Lammermoor. Audience favorite Sir Gabriel the Donkey has had recurring roles in Il Barbiere di Siviglia and La Bohème.
