This DVD presents the Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s concert at the 1971 Edinburgh Festival – their first outside North America – under the baton of Georg Solti, with whom the orchestra would become inextricably linked. In compelling accounts of Mendelssohn’s A Midsummer Night's Dream Overture and Brahms’s Symphony No. 1, the combination of conductor and orchestra produces truly impressive results which contrast astounding power with tenderness and grace. This recording is exemplary of the way in which Solti’s association with the CSO remains legendary in the history of orchestral performance.
This is the first release of this material on DVD and is the first in a series of Sir Georg Solti/CSO releases to come from ICA Classics to celebrate Solti’s centenary.
History
Music Notes
Most Western music is based on a system of notation that evolved around 1600 out of earlier practices. The starting point for any opera is the full score, which contains all individual voices and instruments arranged in a specific order on the page. The written music—representing the sounds a composer creates in his head—then comes to life performed by singers onstage and played by the orchestra.
