History
Marnie
Contemporary opera composer, Nico Muhly, unveiled his second opera, Marnie, for the Met in its 2018/2019 season with a gripping reimagining of Winston Graham’s 1961 novel, by the same name, which also inspired Alfred Hitchcock’s famous psychological thriller.
Set in the 1950s, amidst a fast-moving, cinematic world, Muhly’s two-act opera is about a beautiful, mysterious young woman, traumatized as a girl, who becomes a sexually troubled, kleptomaniac, assuming multiple identities. The love of a wealthy gentleman and psychoanalysis eventually rescue Marnie from herself.
In keeping with the style of the setting and theme, each personality is represented by a different colored, mid-century style coat, a device used to help the audience discern between the separate personas within Marnie.
