My dear Mr. Lieberman,

Thank you very much for your letter. I was delighted to learn of the plans for the “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” performances in Hamburg, and I feel very honoured that you have chosen the work to open the magnificent week of contemporary opera. I am unfortunately exceedingly worried about my being able to come to Hamburg at this time since I shall have been very involved by the production of the work in London, and will be just starting a concert tour in Europe. But I am coming for a recital in Hamburg on December 8th this year; perhaps we can meet around that time and discuss the matter more fully. Thank you, however, very much for your kind invitation. With best wishes. Yours sincerely, Benjamin Britten
