Opera News - April 6, 1959
Volume 23, Number 23
Published by the Metropolitan Opera Guild

This 1959 vintage issue of Opera News has a focus on Puccini’s Tosca, and its cover silhouettes the “blessed angel” against the panorama of the Eternal City.

Each of these vintage Opera News magazines measures 7” wide and 10” tall and is roughly 32-36 pages in length. Lovingly preserved, each is a fascinating time capsule of what was happening at the Met Opera during its publication. They include interesting opera analysis, multiple black and white photos, and charming ads from the era. However, with the gorgeous covers you may just want to frame it to use as unique opera decor!

Tosca premiered in 1900 at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome. It is one of the world’s most frequently performed operas and is known as much for its gripping drama as for its appealing score. The setting is Rome, where Tosca, a beautiful and famous singer, battles to save her lover Mario from the sadistic police chief Scarpia. The role of Tosca has been long considered a proving ground for great operatic actresses.
