Nico Muhly’s opera Two Boys was recorded live in 2013. Conducted by David Robertson, the two-act opera is loosely based on true events and follows a lonely detective whose investigation of a seemingly simple crime draws her into a complex web of online intrigue. With a libretto by award-winning playwright Craig Lucas, Bartlett Sher’s production stars Alice Coote as Detective Inspector Anne Strawson and Paul Appleby as Brian, the 16-year-old boy at the center of her investigations.

Vermont-born Muhly, 32, is the youngest composer ever commissioned by the Met, and Two Boys is his first large-scale opera. The New Yorker praised Two Boys as a “bighearted, fearless work,” noting that “Muhly handles this lurid story with thoughtfulness and compassion: plaintive chorales and brooding ostinatos suggest the sadness and the loneliness lurking within the electronic global village.”

Nico Muhly’s Two Boys

Nico Muhly’s acclaimed new work, first seen at London’s English National Opera in 2011, has its U.S. premiere at the Met in the 2013–14 season, in a production directed by Bartlett Sher. The opera, loosely inspired by real events, explores the shadowy world of the Internet, as a detective investigates the stabbing of one teenage boy by another—and discovers a tangled web of online intrigue. The New York Times called Two Boys “a landmark in the career of an important artist…a work of dark beauty.”
