Recorded in the late 1950s and early 60s, Solti's Ring, with the Vienna Philharmonic and a cast of great Wagnerian singers, remains the definitive Ring for many enthusiasts. The Golden Ring is one the first and greatest music documentaries ever made for TV.
In addition to a fascinating peek behind-the-scenes, we hear Sir Georg Solti talking about the issues in committing The Ring to disc, and see such great singers as Birgit Nilsson, Wolfgang Windgassen, Gottlob Frick, and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau in rehearsal, and witness the recording of several of the final takes that made their way onto the recording.

In addition to the original English-language version, the DVD also includes the special German version of the program, Hinter den Kulissen der Götterdämmerung, with German narration and with the Solti interviews conducted in German.

Also included: Ring audio highlights, taken from the legendary recording itself; full sung texts in German and English are featured in the DVD booklet.
 

Richard Wagner’s Der Ring des Nibelungen

Conceived and written over a period of more than 25 years, Wagner’s Ring cycle is an epic musical journey of four operas: Das Rheingold, Die Walküre, Siegfried, and Götterdämmerung. Its story of gods, dwarves, and men and the quest for an all-powerful ring was inspired by many sources, including 13th-century Icelandic writings and the medieval German Nibelungenlied. The complete cycle was first seen at the inaugural Bayreuth Festival in 1876. The Met’s landmark production, directed by Robert Lepage, premiered over the course of the 2010–11 and 2011–12 seasons. The DVD release of its Live in HD presentation won the 2013 Grammy Award for Best Opera Recording.
