Engelbert Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel
Hänsel und Gretel, inspired by the Grimm fairly tale of the same name, premiered at Weimar’s Court Theater in 1893. Humperdinck had originally been asked by his sister to provide a few songs to a children’s play but grew so fond of the story that he expanded it into a full-length opera. The Met’s English-language version returns this season as the holiday presentation for families.
