Mr. Podwal's work is represented in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Victoria and Albert Museum, among many others. He created this card exclusively for the Met Opera Shop, inspired by VerdiÍs Nabucco. The winged Hebrew letters evoke the opera's signature aria, “Va, Pensiero” (Fly, Thoughts).

Verdi’s biblical drama about King Nebuchadnezzar and the exiled Israelites premiered in Milan’s Teatro alla Scala in 1842. It was one of the composer’s earliest triumphs, and is considered by many to be the true beginning of his artistic career. The work is renowned for its rousing choruses, especially “Va, pensiero” (“Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves”), which is now regarded as a kind of unofficial national anthem by many Italians who find in it moving echoes of their own historic quest for a nation-state.
