La Bohème Poster
Add a touch of elegance to any room with this art print reproduction of Adolfo Hohenstein’s magnificent turn-of-the-century poster design for La Bohème.
About the Artist:
Adolfo Hohenstein (1854-1928), considered to be “father of the Italian poster art”, was a painter, advertiser, illustrator, set designer and costume designer.
In his early career, he worked as a set designer and costumier at La Scala. As Art Director at Ricordi Printing, he created covers for libretti and musical scores, posters, playbills and postcards. It was in this role that Hohenstein created designs for La Bohème, Falstaff, Tosca and Madam Butterfly.
One of the most popular operas of all time, Puccini’s La Bohème premiered at Turin’s Teatro Regino in 1896. The work, renowned for its beautiful arias and emotional intensity, opens in the Parisian garret of a group of young artists and writers. This is where the poet Rodolfo meets his neighbor Mimì, who knocks on the door and asks to borrow a candle. Thus begins a fateful – and unforgettable – relationship as the two struggle to sustain their love against the challenges of poverty, jealousy and physical decline.
