Geraldine Farrar Signed Vintage Image

An exquisitely framed vintage image of soprano Geraldine Farrar as Manon, with her inscription and autograph. The gold frame measures 6.5” w x 8” h.

Ms. Farrar was with the Metropolitan Opera from 1906 until her retirement in 1922, during which time she sang 29 roles in almost 500 performances. Her fervent female fans were known as “Gerryflappers.” She also starred in over a dozen silent films, including Cecil B. De Mille's 1915 adaptation of Georges Bizet's opera Carmen.

Massenet’s most popular work, based on Abbe Prévost’s novel Manon Lescaut, premiered at Paris’s Opéra-Comique in 1884. Laurent Pelly, who created the Met’s new production of the opera, says: “Manon is an adventure that amuses, moves, and frightens us. The title character is lively, free, young, and feckless—and she manipulates all the men around her purely for her own pleasure. Anna Netrebko is remarkable in the part—she has sex appeal, a bewitching voice, and she is an extraordinary actress.”
