Brunhilde and Wotan (2010) by Elizabeth Peyton
Brunhilde and Wotan, 2010
By Elizabeth Peyton
Elizabeth Peyton has created a special limited edition of 30 etchings, Brunhilde and Wotan, on the occasion of her 2010 show, Wagner, in the Arnold and Marie Schwartz Gallery Met at the Metropolitan Opera. The striking image depicts of the of the most moving images in Die Walküre: Wotan’s kiss before putting Brunnhilde into a magical sleep.
Elizabeth Peyton is best known for her gemlike paintings of friends, and historical figures. New York’s New Museum has called her “a painter of modern life,” whose “small, jewel-like portraits are intensely empathetic, intimate and even personal.”
The etchings are numbered and signed by the artist, and all proceeds from the sale of the prints will support the Arnold and Marie Schwartz Gallery Met.
The Metropolitan Opera thanks Elizabeth Peyton; her gallery, Gavin Brown’s enterprise, and print publisher, Two Palms Press, for their donation of the proceeds from this sale.
