Béla Bartók’s Bluebeard’s Castle

Bartók’s only opera, first seen in 1918 in Budapest, is a psychologically charged thriller based on the fairy tale of Bluebeard, a sinister character with a dark secret. Best known from Charles Perrault’s Tales of Mother Goose, the story has been adapted many times in different genres, by artists ranging from the Brothers Grimm to Jacques Offenbach. Bluebeard’s Castle is performed at the Met in 2014–15 as a double bill with Tchaikovsky’s Iolanta.
